Our BacKstoRy

For twenty years Blind Summit have consistently subverted people's expectations of puppetry: from giant storybook characters in the opening ceremony of London’s 2012 Olympic Games to The Table, a globally successful touring production that completely up-ended audiences’ understanding of how puppet and puppeteer communicate.

Mark Down’s work as Director and Master Puppeteer has drawn plaudits in a series of landmark opera and theatre productions all over the world, including commissions for the Spoleto and

Bregenz Festivals and, in Anthony Minghella’s production of Madame Butterfly, for the English National Opera and, currently, the Met Opera in New York. Blind Summit’s cohort of exceptional makers and puppeteers has also contributed to the creation of some of the most extraordinary spectacles of recent years, including War Horse and Pinocchio at the Royal National Theatre and The Lorax at the Old Vic.

PurPOSE

Our aim is to "Make Puppetry History"

Our Mission is to expand the definition of a puppet.

VisioN

1 - To create, hold and present a repertoire of adult puppet-based theatre, not limited by scale and with a quality of puppetry that compares with the best human performers.

2 - To develop and keep an extended cohort of superb actor-puppeteers.

3 - Always to make work that challenges audiences’, collaborators’ and peers’ expectations of what can be achieved through puppetry.

4 - For Blind Summit’s productions to stimulate critical comparison with, and be compared to, the best of British theatre-making.

5 - For Blind Summit to be recognized as the embodiment of a uniquely effective and holistic process of making work and to champion that process more widely within the theatre sector.

"if it's never been done with puppets before, we'll try it"
