Based on Gogol's short story, "Christmas Eve", this is an early version of Cinderella: Beautiful Oxana promises to marry lovesick Vakula, the blacksmith, if he brings her the Tsarina's slippers. Hopeless he decides to kill himself. Then the devil jumps on his back and offers to help...
